Just moved into a house that's about 6 years old. The house has an American Standard Freedom 80 gas furnace. The furnace has a new filter and the burners are coming on. I hear the burners light and then after a minute or two the blower comes on. However, I've checked the output from the vents and it's only about 88-90 degrees. From what I understand the vent output into the rooms should be well in the 120-130 degree range. The furnace will then stay on for about 5 minutes in the 90 degree range and then shut off.

Any ideas ?

I suspect that gas pressure is too low. If you don't have a manometer then you will need a pro to adjust the pressures correctly.

I checked the temperature on the main floor vents and it's coming out between 115-120 degrees. However, the second floor is only reaching about 90 degrees. I seem to be getting a strong air floor on the second floor just not the temperature.

Will an inline fan help or do you suggest something else ?

That's really impossible to have good air flow to 2nd fl and a 30 degree temp difference at the same time. You need to insert probe into vent to measure temp cuz it mixes w/ room temp air as soon as it leaves vent. You don't need to though cuz supply air is 115-120 like you said. Sounds great to me. You sure that wasn't a ceiling return temp you were reading? If room(s) on 2nd floor are cold in winter then check for dampers in trunk for each floor and close 1st floor 1/2 way.

I have a thermometer with about a 6 inch probe that goes down well into the heat vent. I've checked that the dampers are open. Is it possible I'm just losing that much heat in the ductwork ? As I said, I'm still getting very good airflow on the second story.

Sounds like you have an air flow issue. Make sure the filter and blower wheel are clean. Also, ensure you do not have more than 1 filter in the return duct. Pull the filter and turn the heat on and see what happens.
