I run my (York) furnace fan continously year round. I do this to help filter the air in my house although I'm not sure if this is the best approach. Anyway, I noticed recently that the fan wasn't running and the furnace was making a strange humming noise. Also, the status code on the front of the furnace was flashing red. I turned the furnace off and reset the diagnostics before I realized that the flash sequence was important. Since that time, the fan has stopped working several times with the humming noise. The status light however remained green (normal). Presently, the fan is not running at all (even though the thermostat is on continuous)and there is no humming noise. Any ideas or advice?

If the fan motor body is hot, it could either be "shot" or the capacitor is in need of replacement. I am not sure how "experienced you are, but based on your abilities you can try the following: First make sure the furnace is off, use circuit breaker. Then try and spin the fan blade. If it is hard to spin, motor needs repllaced. If it spins freely, with no noise, it may just need oil and the capacitor replaced. If you can get to the capacitor ( metal "can") om the side of the motor. Is it bulged, discolored, if so it needs to be replaced. Easy. It will say something like 5mf 330V.
