Could someone please tell me what wires go where on a new thermostat? The wires coming out of the wall are red, green, blue, yellow and maybe tan or dirty white. I've got the new Honeywell RTH230B on the wall and I'm looking at Rh Rc W Y G.
I'm guessing the last three are white, yellow, green? So where does the blue wire go? And the red? The Rh and Rc have a little red wire joining the two of them. Does that come out? I'm thinking no, or it wouldn't be there. Please help. I don't want another cold night and I getting soooo frustrated.

I usually ask what make and model was your old stat, and what color wire was connected to each terminal on the old stat. Since it seems that you do not have this information...

Turn off power to your heater before replace the stat or you might pop a fuse or damage your transformer.

Rc & Rh = red
W = (dirty) white
G = green
Y = yellow
tape off your blue wire

Thank you so much for responding. I'm a single woman and pretty self sufficient. (My favorite toy is a compound miter saw!) Anyway, I've replaced all the light fixtures and switches in my house, and yet I need to ask one more incredibly stupid question: Do I just attached the red wire to the Rh terminal, leaving in the little wire that joins Rh and Rc?
I called Honeywell and after spending forever giving him personal info, he said he couldn't answer that question and that I'd have to get a licensed HVAC person to come over! By the way- after the orignal HVAC guy diagnosed my problem as the thermostat for $120, he wanted another $180 for the new one and installation. And that's how I got to this point!

Thanks again

Yep, attach the wires as you propose. Leave the jumper joining Rh and Rc.

When you're finished, your wiring should match the diagram posted above.

If you have a heatpump you will need a different stat.
