Hi,
we have a Clare 1982 Furance, recently I realised that when Fan is AUTO in thermostat, and Heat. when the system is not working , still fan is runing but very gently and not like operational condition, if you go close to furnace you can hear or see it is turning. if you put Fan ON, Motor sound changes and it goes to a more Strong mode, and you feel that really working even from upstare.
Whay that should work and run in gentel mode ( Idol) when system supposed to be down?
The nly way to turn fan Off is to turn off the System switch. even if you off from thermostat, that is not going to stop.

You probably have a 2 speed belt drive motor which is normal. I would get rid of that furnace. It is totally obselete. Clare went out of business around 1990. Very few parts are available for it.
