My 2 ton heat pump compressor started making a fast knocking sound when shutting off. Had the refrigerant level checked, in fact the whole system has been checked. It is mated to the proper air handler with txv at the a/h. No other parts are knocking, just the compressor. It also starts up rather loud with a knock. I'm wondering if it will fail and I'll see LRA pretty soon. It is a Goodman 16 SEER R410A system, only a few months old. Any ideas?

Is it a scroll compressor? If it is, then that would explain the noisy shut down, that is normal, should only last for a few seconds. Knocking on start up could indicate liquid slugging; which will eventually destroy your compressor. Diagnoising and fixing liquid slugging can be time consuming and costly, good luck.

It is a scroll. Thing is, I don't remimber it knocking when it was newer, seemed to start up later on, after a few months of use. The sound on startup maybe my ears playing tricks on me, sounds like maybe a single knock, but is probably just the contactor. Much thanks for the reply

That might be the reversing valve(normal).

Thanks. I got very mixed messages on another hvac website, sounded like they didn't like me just because I asked a question. I appreciate your way of handling things. When the compressor on this system is up and running it sounds perfectly normal, everything works as it should, the temp spread between the supply and return ducts is 20 degrees, it's there. The scroll noise had me wondering. I did read something Goodman may have said about a slow acting reversing valve causing noise for about 10 seconds during the start of the defrost cycle. That happens on my system also.
