getting ready to replace a furnace/split system 10 seer Goodman, won't go into all the problems i found with the original installation. anyway, is the assumption correct that the higher the SEER of a properly matched heat pump system and variable speed air handler, that the heating ability of that system will be more efficient as well as the cooling? trying to see if i can forego putting in heat coils as I know they are not an efficient means of heating. I'm in the panhandle of florida near pensacola to give you an idea of the seasonal temps we deal with.

Don't se why you would need a furnance in Fla. heat pump should offer enough heat. If you purchase a 13 SEER condenser also purchase a 13 SEER AHU. Do not mismatch. And yes, the higher the SEER the more energy effecient the machine is.

High end heat pumps will have a lower SEER rating than their straight cooling counterparts. I would buy the gas furnace and condenser combination if gas is available.

The higher SEER units won't provide any more/extra heat/cool output, that is determined by the BTU's of the unit. They just use less energy. Adding a ECM variable speed fan increases SEER of the package by 1. I would check with your contractor if electric strips can be added later if necessary. It is a much simpler/more reliable way to heat your house. Furnaces have igniters, ventors and other parts to go wrong. Strips heat is very simple and reliable in my opinion. Make sure you have a heat load/loss calculation done to get the proper size units. Do it yourself. Try this one: http://www.hvac.cc /.
