I'm starting my central air unit, a Ruud uaka-030JAZ, for the first time of the season, but neither the fan nor the condensor turn on. I've checked the circut breakers, the thermostat wiring, batteries, power switch for blower, etc., but nothing seems to be wrong. I haven't touched it since last fall and it was working fine back then. Any ideas before I call for a professional to come in? Thanks!

Andrew

If you are saying that nothing happens when stat is set to cool then try this: Pull stat off wall. Use a piece of wire as a jumper and jump these terminals: R to G, fan should come on. R to Y compressor should come on(may have time delay built in). If these things turn on then stat is bad. Could be other things.

Thanks very much. Tried that and no dice on either, so it looks like there's something more serious going on. Guess I'm looking at calling for service. Appreciate the help.

perhaps a mouse chewed the wires in the outdoor a/c unit that caused a short when you turned it on, thus blowing the transformer or fuse(inside the indoor unit).

I opened up the outdoor unit and there was an old bird's nest inside it (I have no idea how the bird managed to get in and out), but the wiring seemed like it was still ok. But hard to say as a non-expert. Will check it out some more, though, and see what turns up. Thanks v much for all the help!

Too bad it's a Ruud. Most brands would have a low voltage fuse in the furnace that could be replaced.(3 amp blade type automotive fuse for gas heat)

The damaged low voltage wire could be repaired with some electric tape, and you'd have cold air. (I would use wire nuts)
