My elderly mother has a Heil central a/c unit. we replaced the thermostat. The heat stays on even in a/c mode.. Can anyone tell me why? Is it a relay or something else? The blower comes on But only the heat comes out...

Is this before or after you replaced stat?

both. we replaced the therm, with a jumper and without. my husband can manually (outside) start the compressor but the button does not stay down. (he's pushing a button on the "contactor"?

If heat is running and stat is not in heat mode, calling for heat then there is a short in the system somewhere. Be careful with that contactor,230v kills and hurts too.

what would be not allowing the compressor to click on outside? but we can do it manually. Maybe a relay of some sort???

My husband is an electrician so I definately know about the volts!! :) could the contactor be bad? would this make the heat stay on/not allow the compressor to come on?

Ok I will deal with you folks but only cuz u said your husband is an electrician. First of all you have two separate problems.
1: Tell Hubby to disconnect stat wires at both ends and check from each to each for ohms. All should read open or infinate. Any two wires with 0 or measurable ohms are shorted and NG. What type of heat is this?
What is make and model of new stat?
Could have wrong stat or be miswired.
2:Check for 24v at outdoor unit Y and C (usually the only two low voltage wires.
3: Report said findings back here.

Well we replaced the contactor, no use. it still blows very hot air and compressor does not come on. Could it be low on refridgerant????
