We recently bought a new high efficiency furnace, which takes too long to heat up. For example, when we go out we turn our furnace down to 51 F. (something we have done for years). In February, it took over 5 hours to get back up to 70 F. With our previous furnace, it would take less than 45 minutes. What is the problem. In addition, our heating costs are way up over our old furnace. Help. Lorna.

If it is a 2 stage furnace the installers may have not set it up properly. May not be going on to high fire. It may also be undersized for your house. I would get them back in to check the installation and make sure it it setup properly. Heat rise and gas pressures need to be checked also. If they don't know what that is then call someone else.

Thank you, I will check with our installer. Could it be that these 2 stage, high efficiency furnaces are not all they are cracked up to be? mlmv

Just to be sure, it's just a furnace and not a heat pump too?

No, there is no heat pump, however, there is some sort of box that warms the cold air before it gets to the furnace. Thanks, Lorna.

Sounds like you may be pulling to much fresh air into the system then, maybe a damper stuck open. I'm sure some of the wiser ones will be along with more info.

Where would the damper be? On the furnace itself or on the box that warms the cold air before the furnace gets it? By the way, the box that warms the cold outside air is new too. Could it be that it is not working properly? (I'm not sure what that box is called). Thanks for all of your input - I wish I knew about this site before we bought our furnace. Lorna.

It sounds like a HRV. These should only be balanced with a magnehelic. I don't recommend adjusting this yourself.
"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.
