We have an older residential 10 seer airconditioner which is slowly leaking R22 refrigerant. We've only lived in the house for a couple of years and just verified the leak yesterday.

Our air conditioning guy verified that a leak existed somewhere out by the compressor on the north side of the house, but he said that a repair wasn't possible because of the age of the equipment (his almost verbatim comment was "the parts for 10 seer stuff like this aren't being made anymore").

The only choices he provided were (a) replacement or (b) a temporary recharging pending replacement.

Surely such leaks are repairable? Am I dealing with a company that values selling new HVAC systems over their customers well being? Any comments and/or advice would be appreciated...

Thanks!

-Rich

Sounds a bit suspicious. Parts are definitely available depending on which one is needed. I would get a second opinion from another company. Sometimes it is not possible to properly repair leaks in outdoor condensor coils and they usually are not available. Get a second opinion and get the guy to show you where the leak is with leak detector soap. Post the make, model and serial# and age and I can tell you whether I believe it is worth repairing if you want more info.

Yuri is correct. I have repaired leaks everywhere. Most leaks that I have found have been in the coil. If it is in the evap coil then it is easy to just replace. Some leaks that are hard to find I cut the lines in the house and pressure test inside and outside separately. Put 200psi nitro in each side and check a few days later to see which has dropped.

Be careful sometimes you don't get a second chance
