I have a Bryant air conditioner, not sure the age (came with the house). All worked fine last year, but this year the unit will start OK but after 5 minutes or so the fan on the compressor stops running, the compressor still runs (at least it makes a lot of noise). After a while it will start again, omy to shut off soon after. When the fan works cold air blows from the vents, warm air comes out the vents when the fan stops.

The run capacitor is a year old, and shows no signs of damage. I replaced the fan motor this morning, and the new one shuts down after 5 minutes just like the old one. So the problem remains.

Any ideas?

Wash the outdoor coil off with a water hose, and see what happens.

is it a heat pump? if it is your defrost sensor could be stuck closed and fooling your circuit board to go into a defrost

It is a rule of thumb to replace capacitor any time you replace motor. You should shut off unit now and leave it off till you replace the capacitor. Did you check volts to fan?

Thanks for the fast reply!

I don't have a voltmeter, but I can get a new capacitor tomorrow and see what happens.

One question - the old fan motor had 3 wires - yellow, brown, and black. The new one has 4 - yellow, black, brown, and brown with white stripe. I'm assuming (if I read the diagram right) that the brown and brown with white stripe both attach to the same terminal on the capacitor? The old motor was 1/10 hp, the new one 1/4 hp.

Black to black, yellow to yellow. 1 brown wire on each capacitor terminal. No yellow or black wires on capacitor.
1/4 HP to replace 1/10? That doesn't sound right to me. You can't just use any motor. I would return that for the right motor BEFORE installing it.
