A friend of mine has a Rheem roof mounted gas heater/AC unit. The system works fine in the AC mode. However when its in heat mode, the gas furnace fires up just fine but the blower won't start. I'm guessing the problem is a faulty limit switch but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Also, I noticed a small fan (2" impeller) near the limit switch and some really scorched insulation in the same area. I'm thinking that having the furnace burning without the blower on to dissipate the heat might have damaged the little fan and would probably explain the scorched insulation. I'm too old to play the "lets keep changing parts until it works" game. Any help would be appreciated.

Happy to help

That little circulator fan is the combustion air blower for the heater. It has a switch circuit built into the motor that senses operation, if the motor is not running up to speed, the heat will not operate. Also, if the insulation is scorched, there is a really big possibility, the heat exchanger has gotten too hot and should be checked for cracks, before changing the combustion blower motor assembly.

Hard to say with limited info. probably not a limit switch. Most likely a cicuitboard or relay(whichever controls blower in heat mode). You will need a meter to verify that.
