I'm sure there is a post like this somewhere on here, but no time to check all the threads.
Been in cool mode for awhile. This evening when the fan kicked in, I noticed that I was getting hot air out the vents. T-stat set on 72 (not digital or wireless)and the temp soon approached 80. Note: The heatpump/AC unit is primary. Have an oil furnace as back up on outdoor thermostat (it was running instead of the A/C). Turned T-stat to off and waited few minutes. Tried again and furnace kicked in again. I'm thinking t-stat problem, but not an HVAC guy. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It could also be your fossil fuel kit.
(Turn off power to your furnace before removing stat. Turn it on to test, turn it off again to reintall stat)
If you remove your stat and jumper R (24 volt power),G (fan), Y(compressor) and O (Reversing valve to cool), does the outdoor unit run?
If you have a Rheem, Ruud, or Weatherking, you only need to jumper Y, R and G.
"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.

Kept it off for about an hour, checked outdoor disconnect and indoor breakers, turned outdoor t-stat all the way down so furnace would not be tempted to kick in again, and put t-stat to cool again (temp inside 76, stat set back to 70). Kicked in just fine with some cool air/ unit running like a champ. Adjusted stat up until it cut off (76), then back down to 70 again and it kicked right back in with normal cool air. Anyone have an explanation?
Like I said, it has been in cool mode for over a week with no problems until this evening.
