we just had a new unit installed and we have water dripping from under the furnace from behind the return air vent and filter.

Call the installer back, sounds like a warranty issue. Coil may be improperly sloped etc etc. Don't run it like that. If water gets into the electrical wiring, circuit board etc you could end up with a major repair bill $$.
