"Can I Move the Blower Fan???" , posted Wed 28 May 11:53user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

I have a 18 year old Heil Ultimate III gas fired furnace. I have no problem heating the 2nd floor of my house in the winter, however cooling is a different story. In the summer the basement is alway freezing (yes I have already closed all the dampers on the basement vents) and the upstairs is uncomfortably hot.

I have two ideas to solve this problem. The first one requires changing the orientation of the blower fan. The air passes through the filter on the right side of the fan. Then the air moves across the fan to the left side of the unit. At that point the air needs to make a 180 degree turn in order to enter the mouth of blower. Can I turn the motor 180 degrees so that the air entering the blower chamber flows directly into the mouth of fan without having to change directions?

Also would changing the speed of the motor increase the CFM output of the unit and improve my cooling problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Didn't quite follow your fan rearrangement plan, but fan speeds are set to match the tonnage (+/-) of the unit, usually at about 400 CFM per ton.

The more you increase fan speed, the warmer (less efficient) your outlet air will be, so this is not the answer.

Thanks for the reply. The I'll try and draw a diagram to explain the fan arrangement.

You cannot alter that fan due to the type of blower wheel and the way the motor is attached etc. In my experience that furnace has always had a weak/poor blower. We now have small furnaces with high capacity blowers. For ex a 70,000 Lennox G51 can handle 3 tons of cooling. Those old Heils I believe could only handle 2 tons due to the fan capacity. Have had lots of problems with them riding the limit control due to poor airflow/weak fan design. Lucky if they last 20 yrs. Probably better off investing in a better furnace with better fan capacity.
