We have a Trane XL 1200 Heat Pump. The unit was installed in 1999, we bought the house in 2005. The cooling coil died right before we moved in and was replaced in Aug '05. In the summer of '06, when we first changed from heat to cooling, it wouldn't come on. Turned out it was tripping the breaker. So last year, we turned the whole system off for about 6 hours before trying the cool setting, and everything was fine.

This week, when we tried to put the AC on, the outdoor unit does not start. The thermostat symbols show that the cooling is on, but the air is not cold enough to cool the house since the outdoor unit isn't on.

We have tried resetting the breakers for both the indoor and outdoor units, and turning the whole system off and then back on. Still nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Run the machine in heat pump mode, and check if the outdoor unit compressor and fan are running. If not, check to see if you have fuse block, circuit breaker, or electrical disconnect at the outdoor unit. If you you have a multimeter, check for voltage at the outdoor unit. Tripping a breaker usually is the result of a motor pulling lock rotor amps or a short to ground; both requiring component replacement, if its the compressor, then a good deal more is required to get the A/C running again.

You're gonna need a pro to figure out why breaker was tripping. When you say you reset it was it tripped? You should probably shut off the outdoor unit to prevent further damage to the compressor.
