I recently moved into a condo with an Apollo Hyrdonic system installed. While running the air conditioner the other day, I noticed water from the condensor coils had been dripping into the return air duct, which is located beneath the unit (the coils are located at the bottom of the unit, beneath the blower).

I removed the service cover and saw water beading off the coils into the drain pan, but also falling into and around the return air duct. Apparantly, this has been going on for a little while as there is around the duct flange. I did check the drain outlet and it was clear, so this is not a problem with water overflowing from the drain pan.

Any ideas what would cause this and how to fixe it.

Thanks!!!!

That would be your evaporator coil. Is the coil clean? Does the drain have a trap with a vent after it? If not the drain could have been overflowing and then drained when you opened the service door for reasons I won't discuss. Was there any ice on the coil? Can you dump water in the pan and verify drainage?
Apollo sucks. I would not rule out a crummy unit design causing this problem.

Thanks for the reply Duke.

I checked to see if water was indeed draining from the drain pan, which it was

There was no ice on the coil. The coil itself sits at about a 45 degree angle above the return air and below the blower motor. With the service cover removed, and as/after the ac runs, the water along the top of the coil runs into the drain pan. The water accumulated along the bottom of the coil with runs into the drain pan, or, frequently drips off down into the return air duct.

How should I clean the evaporator coil, or should I call a professional?

Does seem like a weird design with the coil located below the blower motor???

Thanks for any help/advice!!

You can clean your coil with a brush and a light dishsoap/water soultion. I would put solution in a spray bottle or pumpsprayer and lightly wet the coil, then brush off the schmeg. Rinse coil with water till the soap is gone(otherwise the unit will blow bubbles, not a good thing). Finally flush the drain pan with a gallon of water to flush out chunks of schmeg that you may have brushed into the drain pan.
Many different units are designed that way. The only difference is that they work properly. You may also want to make sure the hydronic coil is clean and your filter. A lack of airflow will contribute to this problem as the airflow helps to keep the condensate on the coil.
