I will be honest have no knowledge to the workings of hvac. A friend is an industrial hvac person he came out and verified my compressor was bad. My father in law has stated he can replace the outside unit but I am not sure if it is one in the same and he said he was not sure about doing a compressor. My first thought was I thought outside unit was the compressor so with obvious unintellegence I am sitting here with no ac and my friend has suddenly deceided he was not interested in helping, he did see about getting the compressor but he states his supplier is out and I have NO idea where to go to get that kind of part. I really do not have the funds to replace the whole unit so he said the compressor would be fine to replace unit we got the funds to replace it all. He also stated some other parts needed to be replaced with the compressor because it filters the freon. I am so lost I really do not want to get screwed and if my father in law can replace it then no labor there, sorry to those who make money doing this but I wish I had the money to hire someone to replace the whole thing and financing is a very bad idea for me now since I am buying the house I am in and can not risk not getting the mortgage for the purchase. Anyone know what I need and where to get it. I am in St. Louis and it is a Rheem unit. Thankfully the model# is not worn off so I do have all of that. Thank You for anyone who can assist even with a small bit of knowledge here. AJ

The compressor is in the outdoor unit(condensing unit). It is not uncommon to replace the whole unit when compressor fails because it is sometimes easier that way. Rheems are pretty easy to replace compressor though. Having said that; if your father in law is unsure about replacing compressor how can he be sure about replacing unit? Is he an HVAC guy? Anybody can solder copper pipes and connect wires but without the proper equipment, tools, and knowledge this will be a disaster.
