I have a Carrier heat pump that goes through a cycle about every 1/2 hour which seems to be very noisy - the unit was sold to us as being a quiet model and in normal mode it is, but the defrost cycle is anything but - our neighbors complain about it and they are a few hundred feet away. It has been doing this for years. I have posted a 2 minute video on youtube of my heatpump showing typical cycle with two noisy stages.

I asked Carrier to look at the video it but they have said their management will not let them look at YouTube - go figure. Model is Carrier YZA 2 1/2 Ton Puron 38YZA030310 SN# 2801E04094 and it was installed about 6 years ago.
All I want to know is -is this normal? Anyone have any insights for me?

There is a heat pump close to our house with the same model number and it is also noisy on start up but settles down to a much lower level after several seconds. I had a look at the installation instructions at the Carrier web site and apparently there is a quiet mode switch (assuming it is the right instruction pdf which it appears to be). I am wondering if it has been left in the default OFF mode and needs to be turned on. Here is what they say in the Application Guide and Service Manual(38-10sm.pdf). When the Quiet Shift switch is selected, compressor will be turned off for two, 30–second intervals during this complete defrost cycle.

I am no fan of heat pumps. I prefer an 80% gas furnace in this area.

Does that compressor have an insulating blanket?
When is the last time it was serviced? Did they list superheat and subcool on the invoice?

"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.

No it does not have a blanket. No superheat or subcool on the invoice. The last time it was serviced was this spring. Service people have been in regularly and I have mentioned noise to them but they seem indifferent to it - however they were also the installers so may have a biased view.
