I have Rheem model number RMGXR40-40TI water heater My wife noticed a gas leak in the laundry room where the gas heater is located .I shut of the Gas supply to it ,But befor I did that I took some soap and water in a squirt bottle and squirted where I felt like the leak was, sure enough I saw bubbles right at the base of the selector knob which is located on the top side of the gas control valve. The knob that has piolt,on, and off printed on it. It is ROBERT SHAW control seems like it has ap8555p printed on it (which may be the model number )i have not contacted either Rheem or Robert Shaw I thought some one may have solution or thought for me.
Now I know these gas control valves are replaceable ,can someone with somewhat technical mind replace them fairl easily

Turn off gas.
Disconnect union fitting on gas piping or tubing.
Unthread gas piping from valve.
Unthread burner and pilot tubing.
Remove and clean burner and pilot while you're at it.
Turn off cold water valve above tank.
Open HOT tap at the sink to releive pressure.
Close hot tap.
Have the new gas valve threads covered in pipe dope or teflon or both.
Unthread old gas valve, and really quickly stick the new valve in the hole before the water starts to leak out.
Reconnect everything.

15 minute job if you don't drain the tank ;)

Thank you so much I had already followed the steps cause i ran into an old friend of mine who is a plumer right after I posted the question. he told me to do all what you posted in your answer ,except only difference he asked me to drain the tank before I started ...which I did, it was all going beautifu till i started to screw the line back into the bottom of the gas control valve two little lines hand tightned but just could not hand tighten the middle line in tried to start it with hands and then barely tried to do it with a adjustable wrench messed up thread a bit inside the valve .......(hopefully will be able to kleen the thread ....but here is the funny thing the that same middle tube fitting still screws right onto the old gas valve real easy ......don,t understand that ...they are both robert shaw gas valves and first appearence seem to have the same thread by the way new one came from the gas heater manufacturer .....(richmond) but the gas valve appears to have different knobs on the top other than that it seems to be identical ....may be a modified or upgraded version ....only reasoning i come with it is the burner assembly is made to screw into old style gas valve .......i do not know the answer and I can not call manufacutrer till monday in the meanwhile if some one has experienced the same problem please answer or may have sugggetions please post thanks

You are dealing with a volitile gas. Call a reputable service comapany and show them what you have found and know it will probally be done correctly and your family wont be blown up in the process. No disrespect, but some things should be left to a professional.
