The unit a 5 ton TRANE XL16i will be running fine one day, then the next day it will run non stop for 6-8 hours or longer on high speed (cooling) then may be fine for a couple weeks or sometimes longer.
When it acts up (usually on hotter days) the t-stat will read 74 degrees and 39% humidity one minute then jump to 77 degrees and 59% humidity and stay there for hours.
I Have had the company who installed this unit out 17+ times as well as a Trane rep.twice, neither one can figure out the problem yet they wont replace the unit. (They have replaced the t-stat & control board in the air handler)
The compressor is running and is drawing 16 amps. Has anyone else experienced this? If so what was done to repair it?? PLEASE HELP!Can't take anothe $470 electric bill.

If you need more info let me know.
Thank you.

What is your starting amperage?

Yesterday unit came on at its scheduled time 3:30 pm (scheduled time set at 74 degrees) it did reach 74 degrees but the unit kept running non stop till about 12:00am when it finally turned off. Only to come back on 10 minuites later.

If your compressor draws 111 amps on startup, you need a hard start kit.

Actually it does have a hard start kit.

What would this have to do with the unit running 8 - 10 hours or more without shutting down??

Tonight it has been running since 3:30 it is now 9:10. Temp is set at 74 room temp and according to the t-stat it is 74 and at 39% humidity for the past 3 hours yet the unit is still running.

WHY??

If you pull 111 amps on startup something is very wrong. I doubt that it will continue to start very long, if it starts every time now. You are either overcharged or your start kit is not working. Is this something you measured with a meter or read on the side of the unit?

Have you measured the suction line temperature, the return air temperature and the supply air temperature?
An 18 degree drop in temperature with a 55 degree suction line would be some good readings.

The suction pressure was 135 & 43 degrees, the head pressure is 326 and 102 degrees.
Entrance air temp 76, leave air temp 53
Stated the name plate.... readings were measured with my Fluke meter.

0 subcool and 4 degree superheat. You probably need closer to 9 to 15 subcool and 15 to 20 superheat. TXV problem?
23 degree delta tee is a bit high. Your going to lose compressors if this isn't resolved.

What size is your filter grill? Has anyone measured duct static pressure?

Did you get the matching evaporator coil with a variable speed furnace? There is an oddity with the wiring in that setup. The diagram in the furnace does not display the correct wiring.
It must be wired according to the condenser diagram.

Return filter is 18 x 30, when the unit was first installed they installer did mess up the low voltage wiring, The Repp. from Trane corrected it.Have a Static pressure scheduled for sometime next week.
