"2 year old unit not cooling properly again!!!" , posted Thu 5 Jun 22:23:user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

My husband and I have only been in our house for 2 yrs and our Carrier refuses to keep our house cool during the summer! Last summer we had the evaporator coil replaced in June and then by August we had to have the compressor replaced. Both of these are obviously costly jobs. Thankfully, the builder had to pay for it. But, here it is June again and today I had the thermostat set on 75 but, the temperature was holding at 80! My friend's dad owns an ac company and she said to check the outside unit. The fan was blowing warm air, the small line was warm and the large line was warm. She said it was probably a freon leak. But, she also said to check and see if the thermostat needed new batteries. It did not indicate that it needed them, but I went ahead and replaced them. Strangely enough, once I put the cover back on the thermostat, the house started cooling down. But, then it started blowing non cold air again and the temp started rising again. This back and forth from not cooling to cooling has happened about 4 times today. Does anyone know what might be going on? Should the thermostat be souly dependent on 2 AA batteries? Why would I have already had to replace the evap. coil and compressor and still be having problems? Any information would be soooo appreciated!!!

If the outside unit never stopped running, then the thermostat was never the problem. The outside unit will not run unless it's getting 24 volts from the furnace/thermostat.

Usually the thermostat runs off 24 volts from the furnace, and only uses the batteries to hold the program should the power go out.

Get someone with guages to check the pressures. Sounds like a refrigerant leak to me.

I would get someone else to install a new unit. And replace the lineset.

Who knows what they've messed up.

Seems like a low refrigerant level would produce ice. I suspect a starting problem or a bad capacitor if it cooled for a while after restarting it. It is still possible that you have a leak.

Did it ever cool after their repairs?

I don't like the fact that your compressor failed 2 months after the evaporator coil was replace. Was it the same company both times? I would try a factory authorized dealer.
