Inside blower fan kicks on @ the correct time when temperture on thermostat reaches setting, but outside unit doesn't cut on. Fan set to auto and temp set to cool, I took Y and jumped it to R and outside unit kicks on and for most part cools, it suppose to be 100 today in southern Va, and we have a 1 1/2 story house with vaulted ceiling, should have never done that. I was also wondering if i need to increase tonage. I have 2 units, but don't know the tonage, Upstairs unit says HP 1/5, and downstairs unit says HP 1/4. Please Help. I don't think with vaulted ceilings the house is energy efficient. Sorry for long ?s.

Thanks, duke. I will replace the therm. I still think the upstairs unit maybe too small, with a bay window upstairs, the upstairs unit never cuts off, because the sun shines right where the thermostat is. We use blackout curtains up there, but it still isn't enough. Vaulted ceilings suck! I should have never done that. The upstairs unit is labeled HP 1/5 but I can't find what the tonage is. Thanks again for your time and advice. Have a good weekend.

Many people think that their system is not cooling well because it is too small/undersized. It is more likely that one or both of your systems are not running properly or in need of service. A pro would be able to determine that.
If you're saying that the units worked great until the vaulted ceilings were installed then maybe you will need to upsize. Tonnage can be determined by model# of outdoor unit. There will be a number within the model# divisable by 12(1200 btu=1 ton).
060=5ton, 024=2ton, 030=2.5 ton etc. etc.
Relocate your thermostat.

If jumpering Y to R caused unit to turn on then you have a bad stat. If your house is hot it will take a long time to cool down so I would replace that stat ASAP. Also if one unit is not running then the other unit will not be able to keep up with the cooling demand.
