Have a Trane XE1000 Heat Pump. Last night I noticed that little to no air coming out of vents. Checked thermostat & unit. Thermostat showed unit operating and trying to cool. Outdoor compressor unit running with no apparent problem. Indoor air handler had fan running but found build-up of frost on the "radiator" fins and connections. This build-up was blocking the air flow to the vents. Shut system "off" at the Thermostat. Fan stopped, but outside compressor unit continued to run for hours continuing the frost build up. Finally shut compressor down at main power box and awaiting frost to melt.
Appears to me the compressor switch is failed in the "ON" mode and frost built-up gradually when the fan cycled off & on. (I think the automatic defrost control system is only for the Outside compressor, not the Inside air handler? So it's not the issue)
1.) What do you think the problem is? 2.) How can I check out and fix the possible problems?
Thanks, Yak

first off get unit fix immediately, with outdoor unit running without indoor will cause liquid refrigerant to slug back to compressor, not good. try changing out the contactor, could possibly be stuck just shut off power at disconnect of circuit breaker'. with outdoor unit running, pull a low voltage wire off the side of the contactor and see if unit shuts down, if not, bad contactor.

Greetings, I had a Janitrol unit do that very thing some time ago. There was a relay on the compressor which had fused. Good luck, ebc
