Ok, so we cant be smart all the time right? WAY new to home improvement, I know my Totaline P474-0100 thermastate sucks to I figured Id go get a new one. Further figured that the industry would have regulated what color wire does what, so I just dove right in and disconnected everything. Upon discovering that I had too many wires for the slots available on the new one I consulted the manual, then called Honeywell as per manual. That proved about as useful as an icecube tray at the North Pole. So here is the skinny;

The OLD thermastat is a Totaline 474-0100. Uses external power.
The NEW thermastate is a Honeywell RTH6300B with AA battery power. Im going to go ahead and assume that I wont be hooking up at least one of the six wires at some point.

Of the wires I have the Brown, Orange, Yellow, Green, Red, and White that were originally hooked up. I have a Blue and a Black not being used. I traced four of the wires (Red, Orange, Yellow, and Brown (which switches to Black at the unit) back to what I thought was the AC outside until I looked at it. Not from here orignally, dont know what a heat pump is supposed to look like but it says its one.

The Heat Pump?
Carrier. Model# 38YCC030340 Prod# 28YCC030---341--

What I ass-u-me to be the heater is in the attic. I attempted to follow the wire into the unit but got tangled up in what I assumed was some kind of insulation for the interior of the unit. Realized a) I was in over my head b) Its 96* outside with 100% humidity, Im standing in insulation, in the attic, the AC obviously doesnt work, and the wife is for sure going to kick by butt in a few hours.

Anyone help a fellow out? Basically I just need to know were the wires at least should go back on the Totaline, thanks.

The Honeywell RTH6300 is not compatible with your multistage heat pump. The RTH7400 and RTH7500 with autochangeover are compatible.

option 170 = 7
190 = 0
240 = 9

You really should at least verify C (common) at your fancoil in your hot attic. Carrier usually uses brown for C. Everyone else uses blue for C. That C wire can pop the 5 amp, blade type, automotive fuse in your fancoil if it touches red. Turn off the breaker(s) to the heater before replacing your stat, if it isn't too late.

The left diagram uses standard colors. I still recommend verifiying C.

Great, thanks a million. How would I access this "C" wire? Ill get an early start tommorrow before it gets too hot so Ill have time to wrestle with the thing. Thanks again! :)

The wires connected to the factory brown wire are common.
There will be 2 sets of wires in that little J-box. The set using green is your stat.
(Stat Green will connect to air handler Grey)

Something like this...

I suspect that you already need that 5 amp blade type automotive fuse.

I always substitute grey for white in my diagrams. (White doesn't show up very well)
