My Frigidaire refrig (freezer on top) 35 yr + (not frost free) has a compressor that kicks on and shakes as if running rough for about 5 seconds and shuts down. It has been doing this at intervals of 2 - 3 minutes for more than a day now without blowing a fuse. There was a storm related power failure that lasted about 12 hours before this activity became evident. Could it be starting in reverse or have a bad run cap? Obviously the unit is not cooling in this condition.

yup, sounds like the start/run relay. check it out see if it looks/smelled or burnt. The power faliure could have knocked it out

I used to fix them and you may have a bad starting/potential relay or capacitor or the compressor finally wore out. 35 yrs is exceptional. Buy a frost free one this time. I have had good luck with Sears Kenmore.
