I have a Heil Split system unit,15 years old. Last year I replaced the contactor. Got home today and the outside unit was not running but the inside air handler was on, blowing warm air. I removed the outside cover and manually engaged the contactor with a scew driver, the unit started and would stay running as long as I manually engaged the contactor. The pipe began to get cold and cool air blowing in the house. As soon as I released the contactor with the screw driver the outside unit shuts off. Do you think this could be the capacitor or thermostat? I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks

Mike

Do you own a meter? Do you have 24 volts supplied to the outdoor unit? Do you have 24 volts to the contactor? Is this a heat pump? Post the model number.

L1 and L2 have 240 volts. T1 and T2 will have 240 volts when the contactor is pulled in. Be Careful.

It's not a capacitor or it wouldn't run when you push in the contacts.

This is a Heil heat pump. Model is 867.801202 CH5018VKB3. Could this be caused from the thermostat?

You can bypass the stat by jumping R(power), G(fan), Y(compressor) and O(reversing valve) behind the stat.
Color codes vary, especially C.

Thanks so much for your response. I might just buy and install a digital thermostat to see if that will correct the problem. The one I have now is the original, 15 years old.

You will need a multistage heatpump stat. It will cost more than a 4 or 5 wire stat.
I recommend a Honeywell, White Rodgers or Robershaw stat. Avoid off brands like lux, ritetemp and hunter.

A "no ac" is almost never the stat.

Remember to remove power to your heater (fancoil) and write down the current, letter = color, combo before replacing your stat.
