My parents replaced their AC unit a couple of years ago and now when it is running it isn't cooling their home at all. A repairman advised that they have an "interior leak" and need a new furnace. Could an interior AC leak warrant a new furnace?

A leak has nothing to do with the furnace. However if while searching for the leak the tech noticed a hole in the heat exchanger of furnace then yes furnace does need to be replaced.

Are we talking about an electric furnace? (aka Air Handler, fancoil)
