i have a high efficiency 5 star heater that has turned the flue black. on the outside of the flue it has a blackish hue to it from the cowl down. take the cowl off and on the inside it is pure black with carbon. is the mixture out on this thing? it's an australian built heater so theres probably no point indicating the make / model, etc. is this bad for the unit? i imagine it will eventually completely clog. i guess changing the mixture is not something that is easily done? i have looked into the peep hole when running and the flames look blue.

You should have a tech sample the flue gasses to know what's really happening. Most likely it's a mixture issue but no sense assuming facts not in evdence. Get the facts so you really know.
