I spent hours with HVAC guys in my house yesterday getting different bids on new systems. Our AC has been on it last leg for the past 3 summers...that leg is now broken! I want a heat pump system because I want the energy efficiency and I plan to live in this house forever! I originally thought that the furnace was original to the house (as the AC unit is), making it 16 years old. And so I didn't bat an eye when all the recommendations included new furnaces. However, when my husband came home last night and we discussed the quotes over dinner he said that the furnance is only 3 years old. It is the cheapest thing known to man (the previous owners had to install it in order for the house sale to go through- i.e. carbon monoxide at the inspection). Obviously, I had other things on my mind then. But now I want to know...do I have to buy a new furnace in order to get a heat pump system?

You will new a coil added to the furnace and an out side condenser heat pump unit.

You don't need a new furnace. Only the indoor coil that's attached to the furnace will be replaced. Your furnace can stay.
