Ok this is the deal I have a old ass 62% AFUE 1975 LENNOX nat gas furnace. The A/C is relatively new. The previous homeowners replaced the A/C condensor unit and evap coil. I believe it's about a 2 to 2 1/2 ton unit.

I called some company to do an estimate. He looked at the old units nameplate and said I needed a 80K BTU furnace. I was curious because the output capacity of the furnace is about 65K BTU. I asked him about this and he said you always go by the input BTU??? So he quoted me for a Trane XR80 TVD1B080A936 80K BTU 80% AFUE. The $2,200 price includes the ductwork/labor/furnace and 2 year install warranty.

Why go by input, imput is how much you put in, you want to know what your getting out to heat your house...How big is your house? If you have a 2.5 ton cooling, I'm assuming the guy who sized that did it right your house should be in the neghborhood of 1000-1200 square feet of conditioned space?Useing a 40k btu Output per 1000 sq foot you need 40k to 48k output... Just my opinion.....:)

I'm not familiar with prices in your area but would be a good price in CT. The guy is right, gas furnaces are rated by input capacity. The old one is 65000 output. The new one is 64000 output (80,000 btu x 80% = 64,000btu. You can't get any closer than that!

OK I understand however. I asked him about a price for a 92% eff one and he quoted a XR90 with 60K input that is only like 55K output. Why is this?

This is because the next size up would be 80,000 x 90% which = 72,000 output. This would possibly be oversized compared to your duct sizes and that is never a good thing.
You could probably get by with a 80k 90% furnace since it's only 7000 btus more than what you have now but that really depends. You will have to trust the judgement of the contractor. Or get a few other opinions from other contractors.
