I have a Nordyne S3BA-048K that recently tripped the breaker. I replaced the starting cap and anti-short cycle ckt board. When I attempted to start the cap sparked and breaker tripped. I disconnected the compressor and hit the contactor and the fan worked correctly with no sparks. I disconnected the fan and connected the compressor only I got sparks and tripped breaker as soon as I energized the service disconnect. Next I disconnected the compressor and checked it with a meter. Expected to get low resistance between the leads, but no continuity between leads. Check all leads to ground and found that the red lead that normally went to the cap was shorted to ground (I guess that's the reason for the sparks). From this it appears that the compressor is dead or is there another way to determine this for certain? Please advise.

Nate

yes be sure to check and make sure the blade terminals are not burnt off the compressor.

You have correctly diagnosed a dead compressor. You could verify it 100% by removing wires from compressor and checking from each compressor terminal to ground.
