I have had problems with my Trane ac and heater pump this year. The cross over valve seems to be stuck. Its in the heat mode and will not switch over to the ac mode. I had some one come out and look at it and they said it would cost 600 to 1000 dollars to replace the cross over valve and coils. The unit is 18 years old. Please help me find a cheaper way to fix it. Thanks for all your help.

Make certain that the solenoid coil works. When energized, hold a small screwdrier to the screw end of the coil; if you feel a magnetic pull on the screwdriver, the valve is bad.

If your tech is right then there is no cheaper way to fix it. This would be a good reason to upgrade to a new system.
