I installed a Honeywell RTH2308 controller about two years ago. All was well and working great. For some unknown reason, this summer the AC will not shut off when the thermostat is on auto. It will turn off and on with the off/on switch, but it will not turn off when it's on auto. Any ideas?

It sounds as if your budget stat has failed. I recommend spending more on the replacement.
