Greetings,
This question is linked to another thread regarding my apparently low flowing return air and evaporator coil freeze up.
The system was installed with a 20x25x5 media filter rated at 2000 cfm. Has anyone had experience with these high capacity filters? Before we attempt to enlarge the return duct (16") I would like to know if the filter might be too restrictive. The filter rack in the air handler unit uses a 20x22x1. A 5" pleated filter should have a lot more surface area and flow better, right?
Thanks,
ebc

If you have the 20x25x5, that filter has a very large surface area and 2000 cfm is good for 5 tons of A/C. That is the largest standard filter available and should be no problem. I see them all the time and sell them. I would use a MERV 8 or 10 filter and stay away from the MERV 16 unless the ducts are larger. 1" dense/low micron filters can be a big problem as some furnaces and air handlers are not designed for that high a static pressure drop.

Thanks.
I let the system run a few hours w/o the filter in place. The coil started freezing anyway. Looks like I need more return vent flow.
