I have a brand new Frigidaire (Nordyne) packaged, 3 ton A/C unit (Model R4GE-X36K100X). It is variable speed w/2 stage cooling (R-410a). Only when the compressor (scroll type) is running, I hear a low frequency, cyclic hum that sort of sounds like a train. It is not very loud, but very noticeable in the house. I don't notice it so much outside.

Any ideas on what could be causing this noise? Installer attributes it to possible bad run capacitor. I think it may be a freon issue. But, the unit seems to cool OK. Please help as this noise is driving me nuts! I think the installer will ultimately say that is "just the way it sounds".

Thanks for the help! I think I will give the compressor jacket a try.

The capacitor has nothing to do with it, just gives an boost to the compressor to help it run. Sounds like the unit should be installed on rubber "vibrasorbers" which are available at refrigeration wholesalers. Is it connected to the main ducts with flexible "canvas connector"? That helps it be quieter. Some sounds are normal and cannot be gotten rid of unless you use the 2 methods I suggested and are prepared to pay for. I found their furnaces to be a bit on the lighter/cheaper side. You get what you pay for, which some people don't believe.
