I have found what appears to be mold in the air handler of our AC system. The air handler is Bryant 517en036. The black stuff in on top of the motor, on the wires and around the casing. I stuck a mirror underneath and the blades appear to only have white dust on them.
I have received a bid for replacing the air handler for $3000 or replacing the motor for $790.
I would appreciate any guidance. My questions are:
1. Can mold be effectively cleaned out or do I need to replace the air handler? 2. If it can be cleaned out, what products should I use? 3. Is replacing the motor and cleaning the inside of the air handler an option? 4. Do the price quotes above seem reasonable? If not, what is the ball park range for each.

Is it slimy or like chalk/dust? Sometimes you can get black powder/deteriorating insulation breaking off the ductwork/air handler and depositing on the motor which can be like a magnet. I have never seen mold on a motor, usually on the cooling coil/pan so it sounds suspicious to me. Take a swab of it with several Q tips and look up "environmental testing labs" in the Yellow pages and have it analyzed before doing any major replacements.
