I am looking for HVAC contractors to bid a job on my house. I need my duct system replaced.

The unique aspect of my job is my HVAC unit itself is just fine, it's the ducts that got destroyed. I'm a cat resucer for a local cat rescue group. A long while back one of the cats decided she didn't want to go to the adoption center to be shown for adoption one weekend, so she lifted the HVAC duct cover off and went into the duct system. Soon, several of the cats were using the duct system as a freeway system to visit other rooms in the house. Now several of my ducts are pulled away from the floor. I haven't used the HVAC in some time because I'd be paying to send air to the crawl space. I need to have the duct system repaired in such a way that the cats can't get into it again.

Any suggestions on how to locate/interview/get the best HVAC contractor for the job? Or should I contact a general contractor?

Homeowner here.

Probably the simplest thing you could do (and probably, the cheapest) is to see if you can find new registers with holes for screws. Check out your local home centers.

Just make sure that any new registers are not any more restrictive than what is presently there. The same would apply to a contractor installing an internal baffle (not a good idea).
