My heat pump/ ac unit, trane model 14i, makes a loud stacco-like noise for about 5 seconds, when it kicks on. It doesn't do this everytime, but sporadically.

It makes 4 or 5 loud bam-bam-bam-bam in quick succession, then runs normally.

Is there some valve that is sticking at start up?

Are you talking about indoor unit or outdoor unit? What is the model # of said unit? ( it's on the sticker, 14i is not a model #)

It is a trane XL14i, 3/1/2 ton split system.

Well that's surely not the model # but I can tell you this. It could be a number of different things so i would suggest calling a reputable contractor to service the system and check out the noise it's making. Whatever it is it's surely not good.
