I've got a Trane unit and it makes a screetching sound when turning off.

Some background: I had been having some issues with the compressor shutting off (I'm guessing) as it would cool for a while, and then start blowing warm aire. For a while, I got by by letting it cool down for a while and then after I turned it back on, it would cool again. However, after a while a few months, it would no longer start up after I let it cool off.

I went outside and checked the unit, and the fan was not running either, so I deduced that the fan was cutting off (I had recently noticed the screeching sound when it turned off) and the compressor was overheating.

I called out a mechanic, and I gave him a breif history (including the fact that the fan had just been replaced by my home warrenty about a year ago, but I'd had bad experience w/them and I did not renew it). He said the bearing sounded bad in the fan and it may be cutting off, and that the compressor may have overheated so many times that it was shot. He initially suggested replacing the fan and the compressor, (or for a few hundred more, replace the outside unit). However, when he reset the compressor, the unit came on alright and was blowing cool air. He said maybe it was just the fan cutting out that was the issue and I told him to just replace the fan.

Well, the unit cooled for about a week (note, it does not seem to be as cool as the upstairs unit, but it still did the job). However, yesterday, I noticed it was blowing hot air again and looked outside, and the fan was still running. Also, when I shut if off, it made the screeching noise again.

Can anyone provide any advice? Does it sound like I need a new compressor? At this point, I'd hate to replace it and know that I could have replaced the whole unit and only been out $200 more.

No offense to your tech but we use gages, thermometers and meters to determine what is wrong with the system. Something is clearly wrong with yours. Did your tech use any of the mentioned devices?

Thanks for the reply. I believe he did test something on the outside (but did nothing inside other than visually inspect the coils in the attic), but am not mechanically inclined enough to repeat what he said. I remember him basically stating that everything seemed to check out alright after he reset the compressor (some fault switch had tripped indicating it had overheated). His initially thought was it had probably overheated so many times that it was no longer working correctly, but he didn't state that there was anything he saw that would lead to think it was no longer working.
