I've been thinking of having central AC installed in my 3 yr old home, and, was considering adding a heat pump. My home is now being heated with propane forced air, and a heat pump might be more cost efficient. However, considering my northern location, will a heat pump work well in our cold winters? Or, am I just asking for trouble?

Contact your local electric utility company and see if they have an engineer who can give you an operating cost breakdown based on your local cost/kwh vs fuel. Some heatpumps become inefficient at -10 deg F as it may cost less to use natural gas if you have it or Propane. All depends on the cost of the 2 fuels and your locale. Heat pumps are less comfortable for some people as the supply air temp is not as warm as fuel. Will heat your house but takes a lot longer. They are more expensive and specialized to fix.
