My heat pump wasn't working and I called the service person in. He said I had a leak in the condenser. When he came out with the condenser he discovered that I had the "GREEN SLIME" and this would require a complete total new unit as the GREEN SLIME is like liquid anthrax or plutonium or something. Is this real? This unit is three and a half years old and they are telling me I need a new inside and outside parts. He tried to tell me the GREEN SLIME would eat through the compressor motor windings and I said hey I hope the refrigerant would not get into the motor windings and he changed that story. If someone knows anything about the deadly GREEN SLIME please enlighten me. Thanks!!!

GREEN SLIME is caused by the moisture turning the oil in the system to acid. The system could possibly be cleaned enough to repair the the leak, new driers and recharge the system. The BEST alternative is to replace the outside and inside system and replace the lineset between the two. This is the ONLY way to eliminate the slime completely. All manufacturers are succeptible to the problem, not just one or two. Like I said, it causes acid to form and it will continue to cause problems later on.

i thought green slime was found in early Copland scroll compressors. if you have been slimed you do have to replace everything. get a second opinion....tell the tech about the possibility of the slime. it will ruin his equipment.
