Hi,
The breaker for my furnace tripped. I reset it and my outside air conditioner unit fired up no problem, but air wasn't blowing. I pulled the cover off my furnace and noticed the blower fan wasn't spinning. I gave it a little push and it moved freely, but wouldn't engage. I switched my thermostat from 'auto' to 'on' and still nothing (just a 'click' from the furnace). I turned the thermostat from cool to heat and cranked it up. The furnace lit up but the fan still wouldn't blow. Since the fan spins freely, I don't think it's the motor. Any ideas??
Thanks in advance,
Ed

I had the same problem. See below. as per houston204 i replaced the capacitor (25.00) and that problem was solved.
Perhaps this is the same answer for you.

Hi
I have a lennox G24M3/4-120A-4 furnace. Havent used it for about 3 months, but today went to turn on the A/C. Turned on Thermostat, nothing happened. When I turn on the AC or if I turned just the fan on, I can hear a click, then a hum. I turned off the power opened it and spun the fan. Spun freely. Turned on again and still nothing but a hum.
The motor was replaced early last winter, so I dont think it is the motor.

Suggestions please.

Thanks. I'm going to spend some time on it this weekend. I've read about testing the capacitor so I should start there. BUT I've also heard that the capacitor within the A/C unit doesn't affect the blower inside??? ( Conflicting stories ). I too thought capacitor until I read about fan control boards and fan relays. The fan doesn't doesn't blow when the heat is on either, so I'm not sure how that's linked to the outside A/C unit???
Thanks again for the reply,
Ed

Hi,
First thing to check is whether power for the motor is present.
Check with a multimeter.
Most induction AC motor has capacitor. To make it start itself and run. If capacitor is bad, usually the can is bulging on the side or
at the top. If power is applied to the motor and cap. is bad it'll
hum without turning, then you can push(spin) start it.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's totally possible I missed something, but I don't see a start up capacitor on my blower. I think that's due to the age of the furnace. Anyhow I was adventureous tonight and pulled the motor out. Since I did not have a multimeter handy, I went and wired the motor into a ceiling light in my basement. I flipped the breaker on and the lights on the circuit were fine, but the motor did not spin.
Sooo...bad motor?? That's a fair test right? That's where I'm starting. I found a place that'll get me one in the morning. I'll be back with the results..hopefully!!

Be sure to get a new capacitor for your new motor.

Thanks everyone for your input. I sincerely appreciate it!
It was just the blower motor. I replaced it myself today.
FYI,my furnace is a G8 series Lennox...not a lot around anymore! A run capacitor is NOT present on this model. If there was originally, there isn't one when I bought my house and I didn't install one either.
