So, my Ruud heat pump system thermostat (Braeburn) was flaking out and I replaced it with a Honeywell RTH3100c. I followed the installation instructions and labeled all the wires and connected them as they instructed in the installation guide. These are the wires I have and the order I installed them.

E W2 Y1 G R B C

I followed the setup instructions and when I turned on the power and tried to turn on the system nothing happened. I found if I remove the Brown ( C ) wire and try it with batteries the cooling turns on. I called Honeywell and they tell me its wired properly. So I returned the thermostat for a new one and the same thing happens.

Any thought would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Is the brown C wire connected to C in the air handler?

Do you have a meter? If so check for 24Vac from R to C.
No meter? Lick the tips of your pointer and middle finger(on one hand) and put one finger on R and the other on C. If 24v is present you will feel a slight buzz. It's not painful but slightly uncomfortable.

I don't have a meter that works and I am a little apprehensive of touching anything electric with my moistened fingers.

A little more info if it helps: the system is two years old and they replaced everything from the unit outside to the heat pump to the thermostat and the ductwork. I had a technician come out on Monday who charged me $70 dollars to troubleshoot the system, he told me it was the thermostat and that it would be cheaper for me to replace it myself.

He said it might be tricky due to the fact that I have a Ruud system and told me something about a reversing valve. I have called Honeywell support and they told me nothing. (Unfortunately I couldn't understand them and they had trouble understanding me)

thanks in advance for your help

In the one picture of the wires from the thermostat the brown (c) is not connected so we can run the a/c on battery power.

If you left click IMG Code you can paste those pictures on your post.

I cannot get rheem and ruud manuals. That stat wire harness in ahu2 pic looks like a bowl of spagetti and does not display the 2 wires entering each wire nut well. The diagram on the panel would realy help as well.

I worked on a Rheem RBHA14J11SHHAI 2 days ago that looked just like it though.

Yep, brown is common.

Wish I could see if it was hooked up that way.

I got a meter and checked for 24Vac between the r and the c. It reads 16v to 17v.

As for the connection of the brown common wire let me see if I could get a better picture.

I have a two stage heat pump, can this be a problem with the RTH3100c I am trying to connect?

For the sake of completeness I am writing the resolution to this post.

When the technician had told me too get a thermostat that was for a heat pump he told me about the rth3100c that would cost about 50 dollars.

As you can see I have been going round and round with this for a week or so. I decided to try a different thermostat ( Honeywell rth7400 ) since I have a multi stage system. I hooked it up as per the instructions and it work as soon as I applied the power. Problem solved.

In response to theduke03's comment above about being a wuss. Although, that it is quite entertaining, I have a pacemaker and am and apprehensive of sending any electrical charges through my body. Nothing less, nothing more.

Thank you to all that replied for their help.
