My 2 ton Carrier systems seems to only cool at night when the heat gain drops off from the sun, unit is running 24/7....Any suggestions on repairing...system is almost 20 years old...

What is the model # of the indoor and outdoor units? If all return ducts are intact, and Both coils clean then I would say probably a low charge. Go to outdoor unit and feel the larger copper pipe. Is it beer can cold or room temp/not sweating?
Is this the round type unit with spiny fins? If so then to effectively clean the outdoor unit may require an acid wash.
At 20 years it's time to start thinking about the future, which will be brief for your unit.

Well I wasn't expecting that but you should really take a look at the indoor coil(the side that is closest to filter). It could be schmegged.

Sounds like either dirty coils(inside and outside), low charge, or both.

A return air leak will also only cool at night.
Even though it must pass through the evaporator coil.
