Can some one please help. My parents A/C stopped working yesterday. It is a Tempstar NFCP4200C1, 10 SEER. We noticed that the drain line was not draining so we looked inside the evaporator and there was ice everywhere. Turns out the drain line was plugged. We calla service company and the came in, sniffed the evaporator with some kind of sniffer and told us the evaporator was leaking and we need a new air handling unit. He told us around $1000. We asked him if there was anything else we could do other than replace it and he said no. He said it would cost around $200 for R-22 , $600 for the handler and $200 for the expansion valve. I have no clue if these prices are accurate but is very high and my pops don't have that kind of money.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you looking for a lower price in Florida on this national website?
If you doubt your tech's diagnosis get a second company out to look at your unit.
The 2 things that cause ice are lack of airflow across the evaporator coil and lack of refrigerant. If your fan is running full speed and your air filter and evaporator coil are clean, you probably have a leak.
That is a good price for a fancoil.

Why would I post on this board if I was sure what he was charging me was correct? This is the first time I have ever have had to get an estimate for A/C repair and I wouldn't know if $10,000 was too much. So no need for sarcasm.

It was not intended as sarcasm. Prices vary greatly across the United States. We charge 4 times more for a coil replacement then some posters here. You will not get an accurate local price on a national site. Can you except that without feeling insulted?

By all means get a second opinion if you have doubts. Be aware that some (but certainly not all) A/C "repair" people are really A/C "sales" people more interested in putting in a new system than in repairing an old one (although sometimes an upgrade can pay for itself rather quickly). Replacing freon is very expensive, as a repeated service calls, so if the system has a leak, you need to do what's needed to get it stopped.
