Please help - We're now VERY confused as to what SEER machine we should upgrade to. We're replacing the 3-ton 10-seer Goodman the builder put in. We're somewhat under the gun as it's died twice this summer already.

We've decided we're staying here for the duration and want to put in something that will last, and save us $ on our insane electric bills.

We now have quotes from representatives of Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Fridgidare and York. We've given up trying to compare apples to apples, but the SEER is really baffling us. One said that we should go to 13, but if we're going to go higher, then it's silly to do 14 or 15, might as well go to 16. Someone else said that we should stick at 14 for the rebate, but after that, it doesn't save you enough $ to go higher than that.

Besides the obvious answer that their recommendations are based on their current company's rebates, inventory, etc., is there an rhyme or reason to why one should upgrade to a certain SEER level???

Also, as an aside, the York quote is almost $1000 cheaper than most of the others. I know you're paying for the name on some of these, but is there anything wrong with York if it's that much cheaper?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!!!

-Pam
