I have a 10 year old Lennox compressor unit outside and a 17 year old RUUD HVAC unit in my attic. For over a week, we have been having problems with the compressor turning off and the fan in the attic continuing to run. I had an experienced HVAC Tech check it out. After trying many things, he thought it might be the floater switch. He by-passed the switch and it seemed to work fine (a/c and fan would turn off and on as per thermostat setting)for a week.
Now the problem has returned and the tech won't call me back. Sometimes the unit cools to the desired temp. The compressor shuts off but the fan stays on heating up the house again. The only way to shut off the fan is by turning off the breaker. Sometimes when I turn the breaker on (stat set properly to cool)the unit will come on for about 5 minutes then the compressor shuts off (without reaching the desired temp) and the fan continues to blow warm air and won't turn off from stat switch. Sometimes when I turn the breaker on after the unit is off for many hours, the compressor won't turn on. Only the fan comes on and can only be turned off from the breaker.
With only the fan running, I removed the digital stat and removed the (G)reen wire that controls the fan, but the fan would not turn off. I also connected the old Honeywell mercury switch stat but continued to have the same problems. I don't believe that the problem is the stat...what else can I do? Any suggestions?

Sounds like the RUUD has a fan relay sticking
One step at a time
