I'm having problems with my Trane XE90 furnace. When I first turned the AC on this year, the air hardly blew out of the registers, and it did not feel cool at all. After investigation, I discovered the AC unit (Trane XE1200) was low on coolant, so I had a tech come out and recharge it. All was well for a couple of days, and the air blew normally out of the registers. The next day I noticed that hardly any air blew out of the registers (this unit is for the upstairs). After a fair amount of investigation, I discovered the problem is with the blower on the XE90.
I went to the basement and found the circuit breaker was kicked for the AC. I turned it back on, and I heard the furnace blower start. Then the blower stopped, so I took the "service" cover off of the XE90 and pushed the safety button (to make it think the cover was back on). I could hear the motor hum a little, then a smelled a hot/burning smell, so I released the button. The wheel in the blower spins freely, and pushing the safety button a few times eventually got the blower to start. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to want to start every time. The filter is relatively clean, also.
Does this sound like a bad blower, or something else like a relay? I'm relatively handy, and changing a blower doesn't look like that big of a deal. The unit is from 1995, as a reference. Any help is greatly appreciated on next steps.
Thanks, Rob
