My furnace room is downstairs between my rec. room and garage. In the winter, the room gets very hot (both the furnace and the water heater are in there) and in the summer it gets quite cool when the A/C blower is running. There are grills at the floor and ceiling of the room that allow air to enter from the rest of the house (needed for combustion).

I've been wondering if it would make sense to add a register to the return duct which is easily accessible in the room so as to suck out some of the extreme temperature air and redistribute it to the rest of the house. I realize that eventually the hot and cold air that's trapped in there works its way out by warming/cooling the walls of the room and warming cooling the ceiling, but I'd still like to do something.

Is this safe (i.e. is there a risk of CO fumes, etc.)? Any other reason not to do this?

How big are the combustion air vents? How many BTU's input with the 2 units? Taking return air will cause a negitave pressure in the room and pull the flue gases back down the vent. Not a good idea and against code here.

Its a good life!

Against all codes, dangerous as it can downdraft your chimney and cause CO poisoning. DON'T do it!!
